„THIS IS ITALIAN Navy helicopter, channel 16, we want you to stop now, now, now“.

ROME — The bodies of 26 young Nigerian women and girls were retrieved from the Mediterranean Sea over the weekend and taken to Italy, where officials said on Tuesday they were investigating how the women died.

“It is a tragedy for mankind,” said Salvatore Malfi, the prefect in the port city of Salerno, where the bodies arrived along with 400 migrants who were rescued in the central Mediterranean in recent days.

“I think prosecutors will start working soonest to evaluate whether it could be homicide,” he said in televised remarks, adding that autopsy results for the women could be released publicly in weeks.

The young women were estimated to be between the ages of 14 and 18, said Marco Rotunno, the communications officer for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Italy. Their bodies were found floating in the water by the Spanish Navy on Friday, and survivors on nearby rubber dinghies, which had partly capsized, told the authorities that they were Nigerian and had departed from Libya.

TSS Platform | 10.2017

by LORENZO DELFINO (Migrant Coordination, Italy)

Starting from migrants’ experience in Ventimiglia, this contribution focuses not only on the violence of the borders regime, but also on the determination of migrants. The attempts to stop or limit their arrivals face their commitment to strike the border, to refuse the asylum system and the government of mobility that pretends to manage and filter migrants’ movement. The current attempts to “close the Mediterranean Sea” are to be conceived as a reaction to the protagonism of migrants. At the same time these attempts, made by the Italian government in line with European institutions and policies, open new challenges for those who struggle against the borders – both territorial and social –, since they increase denials and deportations, intensify hierarchies and differences among migrants, worsen social violence and racism. Migrants’ experience in Ventimiglia shows migrants’ movement as a daily social strike with a transnational resonance and remarks the political importance of a European Residence Permit without conditions as a tool to fight borders regime and precarity.

Italy, supported by the European Union, is committed to close once and for all the central Mediterranean route. In the meanwhile, its borders, both social and territorial, are the field on which not only violence but also struggles and insubordination keep on reproducing.

Sea Watch | 06.11.2017 | [EN]

La Marina libica «invia» i migranti in Italia. Altri morti in mare

Fewer people are crossing the Mediterranean, but a nightmarish bottleneck has been created instead

Something happened to the deadly migrant trail into Europe in 2017. It dried up. Not completely, but palpably. In the high summer, peak time for traffic across the Mediterranean, numbers fell by as much as 70%.

This was no random occurrence. Even before the mass arrival of more than a million migrants and refugees into Europe in 2015, European policymakers had been desperately seeking solutions that would not just deal with those already here, but prevent more from coming.

From Berlin to Brussels it is clear: there cannot be an open-ended invitation to the miserable millions of Europe’s southern and eastern periphery.

After the increasing number of migrants reaching Italy from Tunisia during the last 2 months, the Tunisian and Italian governments had „a deal“ and they accelerated the process of deportation, they deported 120 during the last week and they intend to deport more during the next weeks.

The Tunisians in Lampedusa are kept in inhuman and difficult conditions in detention centers and the italian authorities preparing to deport them.

Since two days most of them are in a hunger strike and their health condition is getting worse every hour. They wrote different statements refusing the deportation and asking for their right to stay and for the freedom of movement. Their Families in Tunisia are protesting and asking for the same things.
