Rund hundert Aufständische haben am Sonntagmorgen den paramilitärischen Grenzschutz in Sokolo angegriffen. Es handelt sich um den letzten Ort vor der Grenze zu Mauretanien, in der Mitte Malis. Die Angreifer töteten mindestens 20 Paramilitärs, übernahmen für ein oder zwei Stunden das Militärcamp, zerstörten es und nahmen alle aufgefundenen Waffen mit.

Militants on motorbikes kill 20 troops, officials say

An official speaking to AFP news agency said the gunmen arrived on motorbikes and that all those killed were gendarmes or paramilitary police. Nineteen members of the security forces died and five were wounded on Sunday in a major assault by suspected jihadists at a military camp in central Mali, the army said. ‘The provisional toll is 19 dead, five wounded,’ Malian Armed Forces said on Twitter. A local lawmaker said all those killed at Sokolo military camp were gendarmes, or paramilitary police officers.
‘The terrorists arrived on motorcycles,’ said the official, who asked not to be named for security reasons. Sokolo resident Baba Gakou said: ‘There were more than 100 attackers. ‘They arrived at five in the morning. They cut off any withdrawal by the gendarmes. ‘The firing stopped at seven am,’ he said, adding that the assailants left with all the weapons and vehicles at the camp.
‘They picked up all their dead. They did not touch anyone in the village,’ he said.
A local humanitarian source who managed to enter the camp after the suspected jihadists had left, described the scene as ‘complete chaos’.

[…] Sokolo est situé dans le cercle de Niono, dans la région de Ségou (centre), où sévissent des groupes jihadistes liés à Al-Qaïda. Il s’agit de la dernière localité avant la frontière avec la Mauritanie. Un premier bilan avait auparavant fait état « d’au moins 15 gendarmes tués ».
Des responsables maliens ont attribué ce coup de force à des « terroristes », terme avec lequel ils désignent les groupes jihadistes qui sévissent au Mali depuis huit ans, malgré des interventions militaires française, de l’ONU et africaine.
Une centaine d’assaillants
« Les assaillants étaient plus d’une centaine. Ils ont ramassé tous leurs corps. Ils n’ont touché à personne dans le village, c’est pourquoi avant l’arrivée du renfort nous avons secouru les blessés et regroupé les victimes », a déclaré à l’AFP un habitant de Sokolo. « Ils sont arrivés à 5h du matin (GMT et locales). Ils ont coupé la retraite des gendarmes. Les coups de feu ont cessé à 7h du matin. »
« C’est vraiment un chaos », a pour sa part témoigné une source humanitaire locale ayant pu pénétrer dans le camp après le départ des présumés jihadistes.
