[…] Grund dafür sind erfolgreich verlaufene Gespräche mit acht europäischen Ländern. Sie erklärten sich bereit, Migranten aufzunehmen. Es sind Deutschland, Frankreich, Irland, Portugal, Rumänien, Luxemburg, die Niederlande und Italien. Malta bestand auch darauf, dass ein Großteil von mehr als 200 weiteren Flüchtlingen auf andere EU-Staaten verteilt wird. Sie waren von der maltesischen Marine im Dezember aufgegriffen worden. Deutschland nimmt insgesamt 60 Menschen auf.

„Finally, after nearly three weeks in limbo at sea, the 49 rescued by Sea-Watch and Sea-Eye are allowed to disembark in Malta. This ‚deal‘ is not an expression of European hospitality, it is a confession of failure and gives evidence once more to the inhumane migration policies that force people onto the most dangerous of routes in the first place. If they are not captured by Europe’s allies, the so-called Libyan coastguards, or drown, but are rescued by human rights activists, their suffering is prolonged in a cynical game where EU member states and institutions play with peoples‘ lives. That they are now allowed to disembark is not an act of generosity, it was fought for by non-governmental rescuers and transnational grassroots activists who pressurised EU governments and institutions. Their call ‚from the sea to the city‘ is gathering momentum and needs to be amplified in the months ahead where more rescue vessel will face European blockades.“
