Alarm Phone Aegean Regional Report

The Aegean Sea this year has become once again the most frequent escape route chosen by people on their way to Europe. As a consequence, the numbers of refugees trapped in Greece steadily increased for a third year in a row. While the Turkish Coast Guard seems to have detected and arrested more or less the same number of refugees attempting to cross the border in the Aegean Sea irregularly in the first five months of 2019, thus, continuing with the practice of “pull-backs”. This phenomenon has also been observed by the Alarm Phone. Through the emergency calls it receives, the Alarm Phone has noticed an increase in accounts of attacks by “masked men” in the Greek territorial waters. Attacks which were followed by pull-backs by the Turkish authorities.

„As Spanish rescue policy changes, warnings over migrant drownings“

More than 200 people have died on the Western Mediterranean route between Morocco and Spain in 2019, including at least 22 on 19 June. Spain’s maritime rescue service, Salvamento Marítimo, pulled almost 300 migrants and asylum seekers from a total of eight more boats on Saturday and Sunday.
Human rights organisations and some members of Salvamento Marítimo argue that at least some of the deaths in the Western Mediterranean could have been prevented. They accuse the Spanish government of a lack of support and resources after a recent decision to overhaul who is responsible for rescues in the sea between Spain and Morocco.

Number of asylum seekers sent back to Italy triples in five years

According to data from the Italian interior ministry, between January 2013 and November 2018, 24,000 people were returned to Italy from elsewhere in Europe. About 6,500 people were returned in 2018, compared with just under 2,500 in 2014, according to data from a database managed by the European Council on Refugees and Exiles. As it stands the number of people being returned to Italy could soon exceed those arriving across the Mediterranean from Libya.

Bangladeshi migrants in Tunisia forced to return home

More than 30 migrants from Bangladesh who were trapped on a merchant ship off Tunisia for three weeks have been sent back to their home country against their will, according to relatives.
They were among 75 migrants rescued on 31 May by the Maridive 601, an Egyptian tugboat that services offshore oil platforms, only to spend the next 20 days at sea near the Tunisian coast.
